RIVM activities in Bonn
From 16-27 July 2001, the resumed sessions of CoP-6 will be held in Bonn. RIVM will be present in Bonn as well to focus on more general issues, of importance for future climate negotiations. Wednesday 18 July, 15:00 to 18:00h: Mitigation IPCC Working Group III recently concluded that climate change can be controlled if a broad range of measures is launched in the near future. However, although enough technological options are available, a lot of social, political and cultural barriers have to be overcome.
In this special event, several scientists will present how Working Group 3 got to these conclusions. This event is co-chaired by Dr. Bert Metz (RIVM), co-chairman of IPCC WG III. Tuesday 24 July, 18:00 to 20:00h: Long-term consequences of climate change In this special event, RIVM will present the results of the new global change model IMAGE 2.2 with its implementations of long-term scenarios without explicit climate policies. In the special event, we will touch on issues like the role of technology, sinks, impacts for crop yields and impacts on land cover changes. After the presentation, internationally well known experts will comment on RIVM's work. And of course, the IMAGE 2.2 CD-ROM will be released during this event. Wednesday 25 July, 13:00 to 14:00h: Long-term Climate Policies and their short-term Implications The COOL project (Climate Options for the Long-term) focused at exploring the feasibility and implications of keeping open the option of stabilizing atmospheric CO2 concentrations at 450 ppmv (500-550 ppmv CO2 equivalent). This special event will discuss issues like options for de-linking economic growth and carbon emissions, possible equitable and effective future climate change regimes, and short-term actions needed.
