Interpretation of SO2 dry deposition measurements made in Portugal and Spain within the framework of SREMP
RIVM participated in the joint project SREMP (Surface Resistance Emergency Measurement Program), financed by the European Commission DG XII (50%). The main tasks of RIVM was to help determine measuring strategy and select equipment. Furthermore, interpretation of data and evaluation of parametrisations of the SO2 deposition processes used in models for generalisation of deposition over Europe (EDACS) was aimed.
There is a serious lack of deposition measurements in southern European conditions. This report describes the interpretation of data measured at the coast in Portugal. The measurements made near Madrid were found to be inconsistent. These have to be checked on quality and consistency ; a proper analysis can be made. The results of this study show that the parametrisation of the deposition of SO2 is valid for the conditions and ecosystem at the Baixo Vouga site in Portugal. It is, however, questionable if the selected site is representative for southern European ecosystems or conditions, where the current uncertainty in deposition modelling is largest.
