EURuralis: A scenario study on Europe's Rural Areas to support policy discussion.
European agriculture has a future, even after abolishing EU agricultural subsidies. This is shown by EURURALIS, a study into the future of the European rural area. LEI, Alterra, Wageningen University and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) carried out the study to stimulate the strategic discussion in Europe within the framework of the Netherlands chair of the EU. Four scenarios on the future of the European rural area were explored for their impact on 'people, planet and profit'. A remarkable conclusion is that in all scenarios the number of rural inhabitants will strongly decline; from around 100 million now to about 75 million in 2030.
