Environmental Information and Planning Model (RIM+): User's guide and background information
The Environmental Information and Planning Model (RIM+) has been developed by the Laboratory for Waste Materials and Emissions at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment. RIM+ is an instrument both for maintaining data on emissions, energy use and waste production and using these data for calculations. It consists of a database surrounded by different modules for the calculation and maintenance of data.
Possibilities briefly listed:
- Maintenance of processes: base level ; emission-, waste and energy factors ; process location
- Maintenance of measures: introduction year, introduction grade, etc. ; emission and/or waste and/or energy effects ; costs of measure
- Maintenance of series for all processes for calculating future process levels
- Calculation of policy alternatives, this being a combination of measures and series for all chemical compounds, energy carriers and waste components. Calculations can be made for: emissions, energy use, waste production, costs of measures, gross and net discharges to water
- Many overviews such as reports, map presentations or graphs are possible. Results are presented per policy theme, target group or other classifications
- RIM+ is also used to maintain international data in EUREM (European emissions) and EDGAR (global emissions)
- RIM+ is a flexible model. Users themselves are able to determine which processes, compounds, locations and scenarios to distinguish
Some chapters can be regarded as a user's guide: others are more descriptive. Because the user interface of RIM+ is English, so is this report. Officially RIM+ was used for the first time in 1995 to calculate emissions for some important RIVM publications. Cost calculations for The Netherlands are also performed with RIM+. This use of RIM+ will be extended in the future possibly with some regional calculations.
