Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Netherlands 1990-2005

Abstract

The report comprises explanations of observed trends in emissions; a description of an assessment of key sources and their uncertainty; documentation of methods, data sources and emission factors applied; and a description of the quality assurance system and the verification activities performed on the data. From the inventory it can be concluded that total CO₂-equivalent emissions of the six greenhouse gases together decreased in 2005 by about 1% compared to the base year (1990 for CO₂, CH₄, N₂O and 1995 for fluorinated gases; excluding LULUCF).

Emissions of CO₂ excluding LULUCF increased by 10% in the period 1990-2005, while CH₄ and N₂O emissions decreased by about 34% and 17%, respectively. For the fluorinated greenhouse gases, total emissions decreased by 76% in 2005 compared to 1995 (base year for these gases). Emissions of HFCs and PFCs decreased by 78% and 86% in 2004, respectively. SF6 emissions increased by 12% compared to the 1995 level. Between 2004 and 2005, total greenhouse gas emissions (excl. LULUCF) dropped by about 3%, largely due to lower CO₂ emissions in the energy sector and a steady decrease of CH₄ emissions in the waste sector.
