Impact of car sharing on mobility and CO2 emissions

Publication

Many people are used to occasionally sharing their car with friends or family. Car sharing via an organisation that brings together supply and demand and takes care of insurances and payments, however, is a new phenomenon. As the impact of this new form of car sharing is not well-known,  PBL has studied this impact on mobility and the environment for the Dutch situation.

The main findings can be summarised as follows:

  • There is over 30% less car ownership among car sharers than before they began car sharing.
  • Car sharers travel around 15% to 20% fewer kilometres by car than before they started car sharing.
  • Car sharers emit between 8% and 13% fewer CO2 emissions related to car ownership and car use per year.
