Manufacturing Industry Decarbonisation Data Exchange Network - The database (version 0.4)

The MIDDEN project 

The MIDDEN project aims to support industry, policymakers, analysts, and the energy sector in their common efforts to achieve deep decarbonisation. The MIDDEN project started in 2019 with the publication of the first MIDDEN reports and the first version of the MIDDEN database. Since then, over 40 MIDDEN reports and two updates of the database have been published. In particular, this document accompanies version 0.4 of the database, published in November 2024.

Purpose of the database 

The MIDDEN database aims to build a structured knowledge base for factual data on energy and material flows, greenhouse gas emissions, and decarbonisation options for Dutch manufacturing industry. More specifically, the database covers the current situation of the manufacturing industry and its options for producing the same products and/or functionality of products with net zero greenhouse gas emissions. 

Scope of the database

The scope of MIDDEN has been expanded for version 0.4. The general starting point for previous versions of MIDDEN were entities that report their direct emissions to the Dutch Emissions Authority. In version 0.4, the waste incineration industry, and several smaller companies of the Botlek cluster are also included, of which only a small number report their emissions to the Dutch Emissions Authority.

Since the release of MIDDEN version 0.3 in November 2021, multiple important improvements have been made that increase the coverage and usability of MIDDEN. These improvements include the addition of new sectors, updates to existing sectors and processes, and the inclusion of the most recent CO₂-emission accounts.
