Review landscape appreciation model

Publication

To evaluate the appreciation of nature and landscape, PBL needs reliable models, data and indicators. As the application of existing models has some limitations, PBL requested for plans to develop a landscape appreciation model based on revealed preferences. This external review assessed whether these plans would meet the PBL Term of Reference.

PBL needs reliable indicators, data and models to evaluate the appreciation of nature and landscape. However, the application of existing models such as GLAM (GIS-based Landscape Appreciation Model) has revealed some limitations. PBL requested for plans to develop a landscape appreciation model that is based on revealed preferences instead of on stated preferences as in the existing model. PBL organised an external review of these plans to assess whether it would meet the PBL Term of Reference. The review focused on four issues: suitable indicators, scale, the need for data and sufficient discrimination to assess the effects of policy measures.

Indicator that fits data acquisition by crowd sourcing app

There is a need for a more profound evaluation of the options for an indicator of landscape appreciation based on revealed preferences. This evaluation should take into account the future availability of primary data. There is an urgent need to redesign the data acquisition tool to optimise its use in validation of the model. A promising approach to collecting more data with greater accuracy would be to convert the web-based survey tool to an crowd sourcing app for mobile devices.
