Pledges by developing countries lead to 9-12% emission reduction
A new study shows that the proposals from developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 lead to a 9-12% reduction in their emissions. Assuming all countries take immediate action, this means that, to achieve the 2°C target cost-effectively, developed countries need to reduce their emissions by 50% below 1990 levels. Their current pledges, however, lead to a reduction of 13-18%.
But what if developed country pledges were to stay the same?
If Annex I (industrialised) countries as a whole reduced their emissions by 13% to 18% below 1990 levels, as expected from their pledges, the reduction of developing countries should be 22% to 34% below business-as-usual levels, in order to have a medium chance of achieving 2°C.
