The IMAGE team in COP29

Prof. Dr. Detlef van Vuuren and Dr. Isabela Schmidt Tagomori represented the IMAGE team in two UNFCCC side-events organized in Baku, Azerbaijan for COP29.

In the first event, held on November 18th and titled ‘A Holistic Approach to Finance for Climate-Resilient and Just Development: From Evidence to Action’, justice scholars and finance experts presented on model-based assessments of finance needs for just adaptation and mitigation. Afterwards, a diverse panel including Non-Annex I and Annex I parties, Small Island Developing States (SIDS), and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) responded from national and regional perspectives.

The 2nd event, titled ‘Enhancing Transparency for Clearer NDCs’, took place on November 20th and brought together two EU funded projects (ELEVATE and RE-CONNECT) to explore how net-zero targets are formulated, as well as their related uncertainties, and how the current pledges and ambitions by countries relate to the Paris Agreement goals. This session also presented current collaboration between countries in improving transparency and supporting the Biennial Transparency Reporting (BTR) process, set to conclude its first round by December 2024.
