Decarbonisation options for the Dutch offshore natural gas industry

This report on decarbonisation options for the Dutch offshore natural gas industry is part of the MIDDEN project (Manufacturing Industry Decarbonisation Data Exchange Network) initiated by PBL and TNO. The project aims to support industry, policymakers, analysts and the energy sector in their common efforts to achieve deep decarbonisation.

The offshore natural gas industry in the Netherlands

The offshore production of natural gas in the Netherlands has significantly decreased over the last years due to the depletion of the existing reserves and the lack of feasible economic prospective locations against an environment of low natural gas prices. This report focusses on measures applicable to the 15 platforms with the highest CO2 emissions in the Dutch continental shelf, which represent more than 50% of the total greenhouse gas emissions from the offshore sector.

Decarbonisation options for offshore natural gas

The options considered in this report include three different categories: electrification of energy supply and use on the platforms,  reducing flaring, venting and fugitive emissions, and other options like optimization of the pipeline system.
