A New Toolkit for Developing Scenarios for Climate Change Research and Policy Analysis
The scientific community is developing a new set of scenarios for climate change research and policy analysis. These scenarios are placed in an overall framework that distinguishes different factors that determine future emissions and related climate change, i.e. socio-economic developments, climate policy (mitigation and adaption) and climate system uncertainty.
Key elements within that framework are the so-called Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) and selected forcing levels with corresponding climate runs called Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs). In the article, the authors discuss the overall scheme for a broader audience of researchers and climate policy analysts.
