An African vision for the continents’ energy transition

Access to modern, reliable and affordable energy in Africa could help address some of the social, economic, health and environmental challenges that come with the fast growing population. The continent is endowed with abundant fossil and renewable energy resources to meet the fast growing demand for energy. However, the energy system faces several challenges, and the heterogeneity in resource availability and gaps in access to modern and sustainable energy makes the energy landscape complex. The effort to ensure universal access to modern energy requires policies that carefully balance economic development with the cost of stranded resources and assets.

In this memo, we provide information that can help the Dutch government and institutes to explore how to facilitate and support the energy transition in Africa for mutual benefit. This is based on the visions, agendas, plans and programs of African institutes.

The memo also presents key thematic areas of the African energy transition that were identified during an expert meeting organized by Powershift Africa and Climate Action Network Tanzania in Arusha, Tanzania.
